Questions for Speech ExamInstructions for tomorrow: You will randomly pick a number from prepared ballots of 1-5. You will answer the question of the number on this list that your number coincides with. You will be given 30 seconds to prepare for your answer and two to five mins. to complete your answer.
- You are supposed to go to college next year. After reading De Quiros’ What Is Education For and his description of the situation of college education today, what are your reactions about facing your future? Justify your reactions or answer by using examples from De Quiros’ article and other possible situations.
- De Quiros said, “the problem precisely lies in the fact that our whole educational system is now predicated on enabling students to find work.” Why does he say this is “as narrow and unenlightened a view of education as you can get”? Do you agree with him? What do you expect to get from your college education?
- De Quiros gave this ‘non-joke’ as an example: “I remember again too the non-joke about Pinoy and Chinoy college graduates. When Pinoy graduates meet, they ask each other, ‘What job have you landed?’ When Chinoy graduates meet, they ask each other, ‘What business have you opened?’” All jokes of this nature have some truth to it – or so they say. Do you think there is truth in this joke?
- Jorge Bocobo, in his speech College Uneducation, gave three reasons why students are being “uneducated” instead of educated in college. The first is “Book Worship”, the second is “Professional Philistinism”, the third is “Misguided Zeal”. Which do you think is the greater danger for “uneducating” students? Why?
- Do you really think you can learn things from a “Juan dela Cruz” that you can’t learn from your teacher inside the classroom? If given the choice, who would you rather be educated by? Why?

The Art of Raku
- A person who is good at making pottery may like to test their skills by learning to make raku, a kind of Japanese earthenware.
- For centuries a handful of Japanese raku artists have been perfecting his craft and passing it down from generation to generation.
- Students who wish to learn to make raku will find that the art tests his patience, for the ceramics often break.
- The potter throws their raku bowls, dries them and paints them with glaze, and then fires them one by one in a kiln until they are red-hot.
